“Hurricanes and Forests” Wet Walk 2023

September 2nd, 2023

Guide: Dr. Win Everham, FGCU, Ecology and Environmental Studies

On this special wet walk, Dr. Everham, a disturbance ecologist with the Water School at FGCU, guided the wet walk participants through the Slough, discussed disturbance ecology in general, and focused on the adaptions of trees to resist wind and recover from hurricanes, leading to a more resilient forest. The participants used some of the tools forest ecologists use to understand disturbance and recovery better. They measured tree circumferences using different methods and cored the Grandfather tree.
